Biography

David Warren Brubeck, a Concord, California, native born in 1920 into a musical family, began piano lessons with his mother at four and was playing in local dance bands at 14. He enrolled at the College of the Pacific to study veterinary medicine but changed his major to music, and after graduating in 1942 he enlisted in the Army and married a fellow student, Iola Whitlock. Discharged in 1946, he studied composition with Darius Milhaud at Mills College, who encouraged him to pursue jazz, and the Dave Brubeck Octet (1947) and Trio (1949) led to the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which he formed with the alto saxophonist Paul Desmond in 1951. The Quartet’s college concerts, a strategy devised by Iola Brubeck as his manager, introduced jazz to thousands of young people, and in 1954 Brubeck signed with Columbia Records and appeared on the cover of Time . From 1957 his “Jazz Impressions” albums drew on his travels, and after Time Out came more of the “Time” series, among them Time Further Out , Countdown: Time in Outer Space , and Time In . Miles Davis recorded his “In Your Own Sweet Way” and “The Duke,” and in 1959 the Quartet premiered his brother Howard’s “Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra” with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein. In 1962 he and Iola presented their musical The Real Ambassadors , starring Louis Armstrong and Carmen McRae, at the Monterey Jazz Festival. After the classic Quartet with Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello disbanded in December 1967, he turned to sacred works, among them the oratorio The Light in the Wilderness and the mass To Hope! A Celebration . Brubeck’s life ended on December 5, 2012. His eight Grammy nominations include Record of the Year for “Take Five,” which gained a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996, and Time Out followed it there in 2009 and is in the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry. The National Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master in 1999, he was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Downbeat Hall of Fame, and he performed at the White House for several presidents and accompanied President Reagan to Moscow for the 1988 Reagan-Gorbachev summit. The Brubeck Institute was founded at the University of the Pacific in 2000, and the Brubeck Collection, established there the same year, returned to Wilton on June 6, 2021. In November 2025 Primary Wave Music partnered with Derry Music Company and the Brubeck family on his catalog of music, publishing copyrights, and recordings. In June 2026 Iron Mountain described digitizing rare Brubeck recordings captured on wire for Primary Wave, using a restored 1947 wire recorder.

“Matched by” and the confidence are carried through from the source extraction rather than flattened: a tag or tag+title match is high confidence, a title-only match is medium or low. A mention is not a transaction.
